#whyichoose – Know The Facts

Youth Solutions’ #whyichoose campaign aims to educate young people about the negative health effects of tobacco smoking, while also promoting the benefits of choosing not to smoke tobacco or making safer decision around tobacco smoking.

The campaign is delivered by Youth Solutions and its Youth Advisory Group volunteers and aims to prevent and reduce tobacco smoking-related harm among young people aged 15 – 25 years. Visit the project page here to learn more about the campaign and ways to get involved.

The Stats

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Australia

  • 9 in 10 households in South Western Sydney are smoke free
  • 6 out of 7 adults in South Western Sydney do not smoke
  • Smoking rates in Australia have halved between 1991 to 2013
  • In Campbelltown, hospitalisations related to smoking are significantly higher than the state average

The quit-smoking timeline

  • In the first 20 minutes since having your last cigarette, your heart rate decreases
  • Within 12 hours the level of carbon monoxide in your blood decreases dramatically
  • Within two weeks to three months your risk of heart attack is beginning to reduce and your lung function is improving
  • After one month without a cigarette, coughing and shortness of breath both decrease

Within one year, your risk of coronary heart disease is halved

  • After five years without smoking the risks of mouth, throat and oesophagus cancer drop
  • After 15 years your risk of coronary heart disease is the same as a non-smoker

  • Your skin appearance improves
  • You feel healthier than before, as your fitness improves
  • You save plenty of money
  • Your risk of heart disease and other diseases and cancers reduces
  • Your lungs work better and coughing or shortness of breath lessens

  • Your quality of life improves
  • You avoid bad breath and stained teeth
  • You expose yourself to fewer chemicals and toxins
  • You feel more in control
Did you know…
  • People, including children, who live with the second-hand smoke of a smoker, increase their risk of lung cancer by 20-30%. Making your home a smoke-free environment is a positive step in the right direction
  • The more you smoke, the more your body learns to depend on the nicotine that is contained within cigarettes. But the benefits and pleasurable effects of nicotine disappear within a few minutes
  • Quitting with the help of a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) such as a patch, inhaler or spray, can increase the rate of success by 50 – 70 per cent
  • Doctors can prescribe medications to help people who are experiencing trouble quitting smoking using other methods. Check with your doctor to find the best way for you to quit
  • E-cigarettes containing nicotine are illegal in Australia
  • Water pipes (hookahs, shishas and argile) are forms of tobacco. Waterpipe tobacco can damage your health and the health of your family and friends. A 45 minute waterpipe smoking session is equal to smoking 100 cigarettes
  • If a smoker is able to stop smoking before the age of 30, they will carry the same health risks as a non-smoker
