Sports AWARE Supporter Campaign

Supporting you to support your young sports players

Introducing the Sports AWARE Supporter campaign; a new initiative for you, the cheer squad of parents, carers, sporting club staff and coaches of young people.

The goal? To give you access to the health information you need to better support your young people with drug, alcohol and wellbeing issues.

What is the Sports AWARE Supporter Campaign?

The Sports AWARE Supporter Campaign aims to share information with parents, carers, coaches and sporting club staff to help them support their young people.

The campaign particularly focuses on youth wellbeing and drug and alcohol issues. The campaign includes the sharing of the Sports AWARE Supporter Guide, connection with supporters via outreach activities at game and training days and a robust and varied marketing campaign.

What is the Sports AWARE health promotion project?

The Sports AWARE Supporter Campaign is part of the Sports AWARE Project – a health promotion initiative providing FREE drug, alcohol and wellbeing education and support to young sportspeople.

The project is made possible thanks to funding, support and a partnership with Wests Group Macarthur.

The project is delivered with groups or teams of young people, with each group delivery including:

  • Consultation to tailor the project to meet the needs of the group
  • Delivery of an interactive health promotion workshop to young players, to meet their needs
  • Outreach activities at a game or training day
  • Supply of support information for parents/carers, coaches and/or sporting club staff

Did you know? Research shows, that positive role models, such as sporting coaches, can support healthy emotional wellbeing and the development of self-esteem and confidence in young people. Role models who prioritise health and wellbeing are in particularly unique positions to encourage young people to also make positive choices and informed decisions for good health and development.

Our top tips: when supporting young people

Some of the things we regularly get asked by coaches, parents and carers is how to tell if a young person is experiencing issues with drugs or alcohol. Or, how to talk to them about things like drugs, alcohol and safety. Here’s a snapshot of our tips for these situations

Signs that a young person may be experiencing drug or alcohol issues

  • Regularly tired or hungover
  • Changes in behaviour: suddenly missing training or games, avoiding social events or skipping school
  • Sudden weight fluctuation
  • Changes in performance: related to sport, school, work or declining fitness, strength or coordination

Tips to talk to a young sports player about drugs, alcohol and safety

  1. Avoid scare tactics and judgement: The first step to getting young people, or anyone, to open up is providing a safe, non-judgmental space for them to talk
  2. Use clear language: Avoid jargon or slang, use words that can be understood by the young person and communicate clearly and directly
  3. Know where to find factual information: About drugs, alcohol, wellbeing or other issues. Don’t pretend to know all the answers but instead tap into places (like Youth Solutions!) that can provide factual information
  4. Encourage help-seeking: If you are worried, let the young person know and encourage them to seek help from professional support services. You can help them with this process to make it less daunting; offer to be with them to make a phone call, or to follow-up with them after they’ve visited a service
  5. Know what support services are available: Where can you, or the young person you are helping, turn to for support. Is there eligibility criteria? Do you have some contact details handy that you can share? TIP: Organisations like Youth Solutions can help you navigate some support options available for a range of health and wellbeing issues
  6. Reach out if YOU need support: Supporting others can be a big task, but you don’t need to do it alone. Prioritise support for yourself and connect with services who can assist you.
