ARTucation

Youth Solutions’ award-winning ARTucation project is a creative arts and health promotion program targeting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, and their peers, aged 12 – 18 years.

ARTucation combines creative arts and Traditional Indigenous Games with drug and alcohol education and harm prevention messages. ARTucation consists of three fun and interactive education workshops which focus on knowledge and skill development and aim to reduce drug and alcohol related harm.

ARTucation includes at least one creative/cultural workshop delivered by a First Nations creative or facilitator. Activity options may include painting, weaving, dancing or ceramics.

ARTucation was named the winner of the 2020 ZEST Award for Outstanding Project Working With Aboriginal Communities in Western Sydney.

ARTucation helps young people to develop skills in:

  • understanding the negative health effects of using alcohol and other drugs
  • implementing harm reduction strategies around alcohol and other drugs
  • assessing safety and risk
  • identifying stressors and implementing positive coping strategies
  • effective communication and teamwork
  • accessing help and support services
  • learning about and connecting with First Nations culture

ARTucation can be delivered to groups of young people in local high schools, primary schools, community or youth centres or other alternate learning facilitates. ARTucation can be carefully tailored to suit the needs and interests of each group. ARTucation can be delivered via face-to-face group sessions, or online group sessions.

“Great program, very educational and could help save many lives. Well done and well presented by all facilitators.” – Aboriginal Education Coordinator from local high school
